Beware of Scams!
In the time that I’ve been working from home (and researching everything that comes along with it), I have seen more than a few people get scammed. There will be a lot of different ways to get scammed unfortunately. The best thing I can recommend is to trust your instincts and research before you accept any positions.
The most common way that I’ve heard of people getting scammed is people handing over money for start up fees, or background checks, or just basically being asked for private information. Now don’t get me wrong, not all companies that ask you for things upfront are out to scam you. That’s certainly not the case. But there are shady people out there who will take advantage of your desire to make money if you’re not careful.
So what do you do if you see an opportunity and they are asking for something that they shouldn’t be (even including information like your social security number, credit card info, etc.)? Google is your friend! Generally, if you put in the name of the company or the person that is asking for that information, Google will come back with a lot of people complaining.
This goes for life in general…if someone is asking you for personal information or money, you should always ask why and if that person is really out to take advantage of you. Trust your instincts. If it doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t.
